Syngonium podophyllum var. White Butterfly/White Syngonium
A naturally occurring species from Latin America, S. podophyllum is the most widely cultivated Syngonium.
Plenty of horticultural varieties have emerged from Syngonium podophyllum and White Butterfly is among the most popular ones. Delicate green tinges on a creamy-white background cause these arrowhead-shaped leaves to look gorgeous indeed.
It is interesting to note that Syngonium podophyllum is a short climber, though it looks erect enough in small pots. No wonder it also makes a good ground cover plant. It is a very sturdy plant, requiring little attention – watering twice a week is sufficient, usually, when potted and kept indoors. It has sometimes been planted outdoor, though under shade of large trees, as a low hedge.
Both its names have interesting meanings – while Syngonium stands for joint (syn) ovaries (gynoecium) in its flowers, podophyllum stands for ‘foot-like leaves.’
