BIRD OF PARADISE

The rhizomes (underground stems) of the bird-of-paradise flower grow up to 1 to 1.5 meters (about 3 to 5 feet). The leaves exhibit as stiff, upright, leathery, concave, and oblong, with a long petiole. The leaves are bluish-green in color, with a scarlet midrib on occasion. Their brilliant feathers and unique, often bizarre courtship dances are well-known.
